In the summer, we ran another of our 5 day Urban Dance Camps. We had veterans there who have attended every single camp – to complete beginners. We had teenagers alongside pre-schoolers, but they all managed to get along so well and produce some fantastic work together! We could tell some of them were slightly nervous on the first morning, but after all our icebreakers and games they were all best friends.
Over the course of the week, the children learned a variety of street and urban styles including Breaking, Hip Hop, House, Vogue, Locking, Popping, Waacking, Krump, Dancehall and commercial. Each day started with 2 technique classes in different styles each morning, learning key foundation elements, a routine and exploring within freestyle. It was then lunchtime (Probably the kids’ best part of the day!) This time allowed students to not only eat and refuel ready for the afternoon, but to interact and play with each other and make friends. After lunch came our creative afternoons. Part 1 of the afternoon was student choreography. Using the skills they learned in the morning sessions, they worked together by themselves, in partners and small groups to get creative and make up their own routines. After only 5 days, the students had created their own choreography in every single street/urban style! Part 2 of the afternoon was an “activity” these ranged from creating their own mini music videos, park trips, dance movies and water fights! (We think the water fight went down best!) These added activities were new to our Dance Camp this time around. They gave the children time to bond with each other, become inspired and just let off some steam after a long day of being bombarded with knowledge bombs!!!
At the end of the week, the children performed for parents. For each style, we had a dance routine, freestyle, plus students’ own routines. The performance lasted over an hour (Yes, for just 5 days of dancing!) It was very impressive if we say so ourselves. The children and parents really seemed to enjoy it, and certificates were awarded to all for completing the camp.
